The technology of modifying surfaces of industrially used materials by means of continuous and pulsed energy beams has been intensely studied for more than 20 years. In some fields it is presently utilized on a broad scale in industry. A significant role among various methods is played by continuous or pulsed ion and plasma beams. Main objectives of the Department are: (i) search for new ways of modifying surface properties of solid materials by means of pulsed plasma beams, and (ii) implementation in the Institute and in the country the ion implantation technique as a method of improving the quality of parts of machinery and tools applied in industry.

We use some globally unique sources of intense plasma pulses, and conducts research on application of continuous ion beams using Forschungszentrum Rossendorf (FZR, Dresden, Germany) and IPJ facilities. Research is conducted also in cooperation with Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (Warsaw), Faculty of Mechatronics of the Warsaw University of Technology, Institute of Electronic Materials Technology (Warsaw), as well as with some industrial plants.

Significant refurbishing of the laboratory took place in 2000-2001:

  • An operational room for a new high-current MEVVA-type TITAN implanter has been suitably overhauled and equipped. The TITAN implanter has been successfully deployed and put into operation as of end of May 2001. The implanter operational parameters: high voltage 20-80 kV; pulse duration 400 ms; pulse shape 1/2 sinusoid cycle; repetition rate 12.5, 25 and 50 Hz; current pulse amplitude 500 mA for metal ions, 250 mA for working gas ions; operational pressure 7.5x10-3 Pa = 5x10-5 Tr without working gas, 5x10-2 Pa = 3.5x10-4 Tr with working gas. Mean value of the metal ion current may reach 10 mA (a couple of mA in practice i.e. at least 2 orders of magnitude more than the currents obtainable in conventional implanter sources), which paves the way to a profitable utilization of metallic ion beams in practical applications. Plasma, from which the ions are extracted, usually contains ions with multiple elementary charges; therefore  some ions in the beam may have energies 160 keV and 240 keV at  the nominal high voltage 80 keV. 
  • The TITAN implanter has been equipped with a irradiation monitor/dose integrator, which acoustically monitors the implantation process and signals accumulation of a preset dose. An optical set-up for positioning the implanted targets within the beam has been deployed. The range of elements which may be implanted is constantly extended. Presently the elements include: C, Al, Ti, Cr, Si, Mo, W, Y, and Pd.
  • An adjacent room for washing/cleaning of the to-be-treated materials have been suitably overhauled and equipped
  • A new instrument for testing wearing and friction of surfaces of the treated samples in a controlled environment has been deployed in an air-conditioned room.
In November 2001 industrial implanter of Nitrogen was put into operation. The project was financed by The Foundation for Polish Science within the 2-year long TECHNO 2000 agreement. The scope of the works:
  • high voltage power supply (80 kV, 15 mA) linked with an existing isolation transformer
  • chamber extensions for implanting prolonged objects (of length up to 1400 mm), vacuum manipulator, control unit
  • technology line for cleaning the to-be-implanted items (washing, degreasing, assembling in holders)
  • implanter main control console
  • pirometric gauge for measuring the implanted objects temperature.
